Efflorescence is the white, powdery residue that can appear on masonry walls, mortared retaining walls and paver applications. Fine powdery deposits of water-soluble salts are left on the surface of masonry as the water evaporates. These alkali sulfates appear because they exist somewhere within the masonry wall, either in the brick, the mortar, or the grout, or possibly a combination of these three. Although no economically feasible way exists to totally eliminate any one of these three conditions, it is quite simple to reduce all three and make it nearly impossible for efflorescence to occur. It is imperative that all steps are taken to reduce water-soluble salts and moisture in the concrete form before mortaring can take place. Unfortunately, there is no proven 100% effective method to prevent this stubborn problem. However, a great deal has been learned about how efflorescence works and how to prevent it.
You can prevent efflorescence by using a DryTreat Impregnating Sealer. DryTreat Enhance-Plus and soaking the entire stone or paver before mortaring begins. Impregnating Sealers penetrate deeply into the stone but will not clog the the pores allowing the stone to breathe. By sealing the core of the stone, it prevents moisture and salts from passing through the stone and on to the top surface creating a powdery substance upon exposure to air once the water evaporates. There must be a path for the soluble salts to migrate through to the surface where the moisture can evaporate. Impregnating sealers allow these salts to pass through the stone unlike surface sealers which only trap said residue.
