Saint Francis of Assisi was a friar of the Roman Catholic faith, who was the principal founder of "The Franciscans". One of seven children, St. Francis was born in 1182 A.D. as Giovanni di Bernardone. It was his mother's hope that he would become a great religious leader, however his father was not pleased with this news. Despite the fact that he was born to a wealthy family, Francis was known to have great compassion for the less fortunate, and is noted for his caring of the lepers of that day. Much to his fathers's displeasure, he eventually lived in poverty as a beggar in the region of Assisi. He is also known for his tireless efforts in rebuilding several ruined churches.
