Portland cements are hydraulic cements, that is, they set and harden by reacting with water. This reaction process, called hydration, combines cement and water to form a stonelike mass. Portland cement is a general-purpose cement suitable for all uses where the special properties of other types are not required. Its use in concrete include pavements, floors, reinforced concrete buildings, bridges, tanks, reservoirs, pipe, masonry units, and various concrete products. In Canada, portland cements are manufactured to meet the specifications of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
