Lanterns of the Yukimi-gata (snow viewing) type are among the most popular of garden lanterns. Little is known of their history but is thought they were introduced during the Edo period (1615-1867). They are identified by the hexagonal, round or octagonal roof (kasa) which, in winter, will hold snow. It is this reason they are referred to as snow viewing lanterns. These lanterns are suited to most areas of the landscape but are often placed by the water, directly on the ground or on a flat stone. Consider placing a single candle in the lamp housing to illuminate the garden at night.
