Lanterns of the Tachi-gata (pedestal lanterns) type can be easily identified by their large base or pedestal. These large lanterns of classical beauty date back to the eighth century. They are typical of the original lanterns designed to light temples and shrines. Such a lantern is frequently used in a large garden and is usually its focal point. Following the tradition of the tea masters, consider placing this type wherever light would be useful even if none is likely to be provided.

MEASURING GUIDE

A Tachi-gata lantern is typically measured from the pedestal, where the carved design begins, to the top of the cap. This Kanjuji Lantern is measured by the long width of the roof. This is the only Tachi-gata Lantern measured this way.
