Lanterns of the Tachi-gata (pedestal lanterns) type can be easily identified by their large base or pedestal. These large lanterns of classical beauty date back to the eighth century. They are typical of the original lanterns designed to light temples and shrines. Such a lantern is frequently used in a large garden and is usually its focal point. Following the tradition of the tea masters, consider placing this type wherever light would be useful even if none is likely to be provided.
