Lanterns of the Oki-gata (small or set) type are based on the design of bronze temple lanterns from the Asuka Period. These lanterns came into favour when rising land prices made it difficult to build large garden spaces. An Oki-gata lantern may be used to create a point of interest in a compact, intimate garden. It is frequently placed on a flat stone near the edge of a pond or at the side of a path. It may also serve as a feature in a small courtyard garden. Consider one of these unobtrusive lanterns for use inside the home, perhaps next to a fireplace or tucked in amongst indoor tropical plants in a sunroom.
